Excerpt from the preface:

The study of Scripture is in essence an effort to see all things from God's point of view, in the conviction that He who created, redeemed, and unshakably establishes His purposes has the only trustworthy perspective on reality available to us.

None of this denies that God speaks to His people by His Spirit in additional ways. He whispers within us, calls out through fellow believers, guides by circumstances. Yet these and other avenues through which God's voice comes are not open to objective verification. They are not a portrait of reality. They themselves demand some external revelation against which they can be tested for trustworthiness. And so we are always driven back to Scripture.

And so too we are forced into Scripture for an understanding of leadership in Christ's church. Here in the written Word we find a unique description of the church and a clear explanation of how leaders function in it. Our goal must be to see the biblical perspective. Our commitment must be to let that perspective shape us and our ministries.

And so in this book we are struggling toward a theology of church leadership. We come to Scripture to discover critical issues related to church leadership and then we follow the logic of God to discover who we are and how we are to function.
